Bayan presses for release of political prisoners AFP wants peace process to fail, create distraction from corruption probe

The umbrella group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan today joined a picket in front of Camp Aguinaldo and Camp Crame to press for the release of political prisoners in light of the ongoing peace talks. The group pressed for the release of detained NDFP consultant Allan Jazmines who was arrested on the eve of the resumption of the peace talks last February 14. Nothing to boast of in 7.3% GDP growth

“The government has nothing to boast of in this so-called economic growth.”

This is the statement of labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) in response to the government’s proud announcement of a 7.3% growth in the Gross Domestic Product in 2010, the highest since the Marcos administration.

Bayan holds solidarity protest for Egypt as general strike begins

Filipino activists today staged a protest in front of the US embassy in Manila in support of the Egyptian peoples’ struggle for democracy. Carrying placards calling for the ouster of the “US-backed Mubarak regime”, member organizations of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan, New Patriotic Alliance) and the International League of Peoples Struggle (ILPS) expressed their “steadfast solidarity with the Egyptian peoples’ struggle against domestic tyranny and US imposition”.
